Out Of The Dark: Finding Hope In the Silence

As I sit here this morning I can’t get around the erroneous feeling that I have absolutely nothing to say.

I have found myself in this situation from time-to-time. Most writers refer to this as the dreaded “writer’s block”.

I suppose over time I’ve come to appreciate the process writer’s block brings. It forces me to dig deeper inside myself to find answers and at other times to just relinquish myself to being silent.

It forces me to search harder for God in the silence by not cluttering my search with words.

Being Still Is Ok

It reminds me it’s ok to be still and wait.

Everything around us moves so fast and we live in a culture where we are expected to always have a direction we are traveling and sitting still is seen as going nowhere.

I’ve been down the writer’s block black hole many times, over the years, and one thing I’ve learned over and over is that this process seems to make me more aware of what is going on around me and inside me. Out of that process, I generally find new hope and new ideas.

It reminds that I don’t always need to have something to say and that there is often a beautiful wisdom in listening in the silence. It reminds me that God created all we see out of a dark silent void. That at the very beginning there was silence and nothingness but in that same void, there came life simply because He spoke it into existence.

I like to think God created all we see out of the darkness partly so we would remember how He can bring life into what appears to be empty.

There is a lot of hope in that.

Some of the best lessons have come to me out of what God brought to life in the dark.

So, today I want to encourage you not to lose hope.

Momentary Darkness

We live in a world that is full of momentary darkness. We have deadlines that we have no idea how we are going to meet. Family situations that look hopeless and relationships that have soured to the point of being non-existent. We have moments of confusion and situations that we have no answers for.

We live in a world scattered with moments of darkness and silence that seems void of light.

While I don’t believe God creates these dark moments in our life I do fully believe He brings life and light into them.

So, whatever you are facing today, hopefully, my writer’s block will help you remember who God is and that He speaks in the light and in the dark; but that when He does speak, life is created into lifeless situations.

You are not alone in the dark.
