Thanksgiving Day

IT’S THANKSGIVING!!!!

Wow… it is so hard to believe that Thanksgiving is already here… It seems like it was only last week that I was out on the lake throwing my youth group kids around on the inner-tube (this is a joy few youth pastors get to experience) 🙂 Though I have gone wake-boarding the weekend after Christmas… yeah it was cold… really cold… but it was fun.

My Thanksgiving is already busier than I anticipated. I will be traveling to Kentucky to eat with my family, then back here to Cookeville to eat with my fiance’s family… (yeah I’m getting married… hooray for me!!!, me = excited) and then to eat again at another location before the day is over… All I can think is it’s going to be a lot of driving and I’m probably going to get fat. It is almost like the day is already gone before it even has happened…

I work across from a car wash that in turn I used to work at (another story completely) Every year, right around Thanksgiving, more like the day before Thanksgiving… They Get SLAAAAAMED with business.. Cars are coming out of the woods to get washed. I remember when I was working there years ago, there would be so many cars that we would send them through bumper to bumper in the wash… for hours… non stop… and by bumper to bumper I mean sometime only around 6 inches separated them… yeah I know… not good.

So why talk about car washes on Thanksgiving… People get their car washed the day before Thanksgiving because it is another thing on the list to check off as being done, in order to get ready to celebrate the holiday. People are going to be traveling… States are going to be making enormous amounts of money from speeding tickets… Food has to be cooked… Families have to be visited… Schedules have to be filled… Gifts have to be given… and God Bless (preacher effect) the football game has to be watched… all to get ready for the next morning so we can make the Black Friday sales.

We have things to do….

You know… it’s easy to totally miss things. Maybe… there is something deeper that is being completely covered up by the travel and food and schedules and blah blah blah.. It’s too easy to miss the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving anyway because we are too focused… well, on Celebrating It… Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy the presence of family… yes that person too… and enjoy what God has blessed us with. It’s a time that we as a nation are supposed to take a minute to stop and be thankful… look around… and realize what we have… It’s a time that should be a yearly checkup on how aware we are…. How aware we are of family and their meaning to us… How aware we are of others who might not have family… How aware we are of God… and how aware we are of trying to be Jesus to others…

Thanksgiving is a time to be aware….

This Thanksgiving, may you be aware… may you realize thankfulness is not an emotion but an action… may you stop and enjoy the people you are with… and then.. be thankful for it all.
